Unhealthy Foods for Kids

healthy apple

When we think about unhealthy foods for kids, we naturally think of burgers, fries, chocolate, sweets and potato chips. These are what you try and get them to avoid or at least cut down on. But one thing you might not be aware of is that some foods and drinks which are labelled as healthy might be less healthy than the foods we have just mentioned.

The first of these are bottled waters and sports drinks. You would assume that bottled water would just be plain water. But actually, some of them can contain a lot of sodium and salt. Sports drinks are normally filled with a lot of glucose too and are only designed for using when you have lost fluids or are exercising. If you drink them because you like the taste, then you will be consuming a lot of calories that you will find it hard to burn off.

The next items to be aware of are foods labelled as “low fat”. When you see them you might naturally think they are healthy because they don’t have a lot of fat. Whilst the fact is that they don’t have a lot of fat, they also might have a lot of sugar and calories. These will cause more fat to occur on your body than eating fat will. This is because your body naturally stores excess calories but will use fat faster.

So you might think you are doing the right thing by your kids and buying them healthy foods. When in actual fact you are giving them things that might make them put on weight and be even more unhealthy. So always read the labels on the foods you are buying and never presume they are good for your kids just because they say “low fat”.

Healthy Habits for Healthy Kids

Healthy KidsEvery since your child was born, you always want them to be healthy from the start. It is your responsibility to give them the nutrition they need as babies to make sure they are healthy, happy and getting what they need. But this shouldn’t stop when they start getting older because they will pick up certain habits and if they are bad ones, they will continue to do them. So if you have them eating whatever food they want as kids, they will continue doing it until they are teens.

Healthy Habits for Healthy Kids

Kids will pick up their habits when they are very young. They will try and copy people around them because they want to be grown up themselves. They will copy what you eat, when you wash, brush your teeth and basically everything else. Teaching them to keep clean is really important. They need to take regular baths or showers and also wash their hands several times a day. This stops the spread of bacteria and will keep them from getting ill.

You also need to make sure you are doing enough exercise, so that they will too. If all you do is come home and sit and watch TV all might, what do you think your child will do? That’s right; they will copy you and do the same. So make sure you do some sort of activity with them to keep them fit and healthy.

Get them to use their brains everyday. Kids need to develop and exercise their brains as often as they can. So try and get them to participate in some sort of puzzles, games and activities that use their brains. This will help them to develop their minds as well as their bodies.

The main thing to remember is to always think what your kids will be thinking when you are doing something. If you don’t want them doing it too, then maybe you should just not do it yourself.

Can Fast Food Equal Healthy Kids Foods?

Healthy Junk FoodUnless you are very lucky indeed, you’ll no doubt know that getting your kids to eat healthy meals is not always an easy task. The majority of them love fast food and junk food and the thought of them having a salad just never enters their heads at all. But you understand that you need to do something to help them right? Otherwise they could end up gaining lots of weight and being very unhealthy and unhappy. Well healthy kids foods can be a possibility if you combine the “healthy” aspect with the “fast food” aspect.

When you next visit the fast food outlet with your kids, there are certain small things you can do to encourage healthy eating. For instance, a burger isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The burger bun has lots of seeds which are good for them, the burger will have lots of protein and topped off with lettuce and tomato which are essential vegetables.

The main issues come with the fries and drink. If the attendant asks “do you want to go large” always so no. A small portion of fries is plenty for your kid, especially with the burger they are having. Same goes with the drink. If they must have coke, then make it a smaller one but ideally it should be diet coke or water.

Cutting down on the calorie intake when having fast food, means your kid can still enjoy the food but without eating too many calories that they won’t burn off. Those extra calories will just be turned into fat that they will find hard to shift.

So, hopefully you can see that healthy kids foods and getting them to eat healthier doesn’t have to be about forcing them to eat salads and having no junk food at all. That will just cause your kid to rebel and eat them when you aren’t around.

Kids and Healthy Eating

Healthy KidIn the most part, most kids enjoy to eat healthy foods. They like fruits, milk and most cereals. Sadly, they can also become too familiar with chocolate and potato chips too and this can often lead to them being full and not eating the healthy foods you give them.

But it is possible to get them to eat healthy foods by employing a few tricks. The first way to do this is to add vegetables into their foods without telling them. Most kids are too interested in watching TV or playing on their games consoles to observe what you are making anyway, so it should be an easy thing for you to do.

If you chop several vegetables really finely and include them in burgers or meat balls, your kids will never realise they are in there. They will just enjoy them like they usually do. Another easy way to get them to eat fruit is to create smoothies or fruit yoghurts. Just add a range of different fruits and again your kids will love them without realising they are eating lots of nutritious fruits.

Most kids will look at food and then take an instant dislike to it, just by the way it looks. So another good tip to get them to eat healthy foods is to make them look appealing. Add fruit with their ice cream. Make shapes such as faces out of the food you give them. They will think that is fun and enjoy eating them.

Another way is to bribe your kids into eating healthy foods. Just tell them they won’t get their favourite dessert until they eat all the healthy food you put in front of them. You can bet that most kids will eat it all up.

So the main thing with kids and healthy eating is to find a way of getting them to eat the healthy foods. There’s always a way if you keep trying!

Healthy Kids Diet with Omega 3

Omega 3 Capsules

Omega 3 CapsulesIf your child is putting on weight or whether you just want to make sure they are eating healthily, putting them on a diet needs careful consideration. Your child’s body is growing all the time and because of this it needs the right amount of nutrition to make sure it grows as it should. So if you are going to cut down on the foods they are eating, you must be sure they are getting enough of the right foods. One thing that you must make sure they get is Omega 3 as this is essential for any healthy kids diet.

Omega 3 is basically essential fatty acids. These help with mental development as well as neurological functions in young children. There have been a wide range of studies and research carried out and they conclude that children with low levels of essential fatty acids have been known to have less concentration, poor sleeping patterns and have bad tempers.

There are various foods that contain these types of Omega 3 essential fatty acids. The most common is known as EPA and found in oily fish and fish oil. Cod liver oil tablets are a great source of EPA and should be taken daily. There are other fatty acids found in nuts, seeds, green vegetables such as broccoli and sprouts.

So if you are planning to put your child on a diet or simply want them to eat better foods, then Omega 3 should be a high priority. Steamed fish with green vegetables is the perfect combination. Nuts can be easily made available to them too, just put some in a bowl and leave them out as kids love to snack on things between meals. Just be sure to buy them unsalted and have a variety of different nuts.

Healthy Kids Cereals

Healthy Kids BreakfastsCereal is such a popular breakfast to give your kids because it is so easy to make. Just grab a bowl out of the cupboard, tip some cereal into it and pour over some milk. Less than 10 seconds and your breakfast is ready. But if you want healthy kids, cereals might not be the answer.

This is because there are many cereals that are packed with lots of unhealthy ingredients such as sugar, artificial colours and saturated fats. But the packaging of them really appeals to your kids too, which is why they want them every morning. Brightly coloured cereals that taste sweet are what many kids crave for.

But sending them to school after this concoction of sugar and flavouring, it’s no wonder they might find it difficult to concentrate in class. But it’s not just at home, most schools offer cereal too because it is cheap for them and easy to prepare.

So what can you do?

Well the first thing you need to do is start looking at the labels on the cereals you are buying. You should be aiming to swap to whole grain cereals as these have more nutritious ingredients and are better for your child’s health. These are usually clearly labelled and tell you how much of each major nutrient is contained in each average bowl.

If you find that your child wants the unhealthy cereals instead, you can try adding some fruit or yoghurt onto the cereal which they should enjoy. Plus it means you are getting more nutrients into them too.

So, by avoiding the unhealthy cereals you should help your child from becoming overweight, stop their teeth from eroding through all the sugar and can even help with other health issues like diabetes. Those alone should be good enough reasons for you to change your breakfast habits tomorrow.

Ideas for a Healthy Kids Breakfast

SmoothieBreakfast can be a really hectic time in most households. There are lots of things to be done as you prepare your kids for school and probably get ready for work yourself. So finding the time to make a healthy kids breakfast is often overlooked. But as the old saying goes, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day, so we are going to give you some tips to help you.

The first thing to realise is that a healthy breakfast doesn’t necessarily mean you have to make a large breakfast that your kids sit down for. As we know, kids don’t like sitting down for meals at the best of times and certainly not first thing in the morning. So what you need to look for are ways of getting this healthy food and nutrients to them in a way they will enjoy.

The way you can do this is with smoothies. Kids love drinking them and they aren’t tied to having them at the table. They can walk around with them and take them to their bedrooms whilst they get ready for school. What IS important is the ingredients you put in the smoothie. They need to be healthy and also great tasting. You can do this easily by adding a mixture of fruit.

Pineapple and banana work great together as a smoothie. Just add about a cup of chopped pineapple into your blender and 1-2 sliced bananas. Then add some low fat milk and yoghurt. Then add a couple of ice cubes and blend them all together. This creates a fantastic tasting smoothie that gives your kids some essential nutrients and vitamins but they will also enjoy drinking them.

This is just one way a healthy kids breakfast can be achieved. Always look for ways to make sure your kid is eating healthy and keeping active.

Healthy Kids Diets

Healthy Eating Tips for KidsHaving healthy kids should be your goal as a parent. Sure they will eat junk food at times but if you are making sure they are eating healthily most of time and getting enough exercise, then they should be healthy and not overweight. But some parents find it really difficult to get their kids to be healthy and many have obese kids because of this. Healthy kids diets are the main reason for this, so here are some tips to change your kids eating habits.

The first thing you can do is replace any unhealthy snacks in your cupboard with fruit. Kids love snacks but they don’t always have to be unhealthy ones like chocolate or chips. If they become hungry between meals, get them to eat fruit instead. If they are really hungry then they won’t have any choice if you don’t have the snacks in your cupboard.

You can also make your main meals healthy ones too. This means you are having healthy foods as well as your kids. Try and introduce a variety of lean meats and fish with plenty of vegetables. Avoid anything that has to be fried as that is just going to be high in fat and calories. You can also make desserts with lots of fruit as kids love desserts and it’s a great way to get vitamins and nutrients into them.

So hopefully you realise that healthy kids diets can be easy to change. If you make meal times fun, they will begin to enjoy healthy foods. But if you try and force them into eating healthy foods then they will rebel and that would make things more difficult. So plan your meals at the beginning of the week and this gives you time to make sure you can add healthy foods to each one.

Healthy Kids Choice of Meals

Healthy KidKids love variety in life and in food. So if you give them same foods each week, they will always look for other foods to eat. They get bored with eating the same foods over and over. So to keep them healthy, you need to make sure you give your healthy kids a choice of meals.

To do this will just take a few minutes of planning at the beginning of the week. Just write down a choice of meals that are healthy and your kids enjoy eating. Then decide which day of the week you have each one. You can change this around each week to ensure they don’t know what they are having until that day. By doing this it keeps your kids on their toes and they won’t tend to eat something different because they won’t know what they are having for their meals.

Fruits are something that you should include each week. They contain a whole variety of vitamins and fibre that are essential for your growing child. Ideally they should eat a portion of fruit each day. Try getting them to eat an apple a day as they contains Vitamins A, C and E and also a good source of fibre. Bananas are good too as they are high in fibre and potassium. Of course, orange are really good as they contain Vitamin C.

One idea you can use is to mix up some fruit and put them on kabobs. Just slice them up into cubes and thread them onto toothpicks or cocktail sticks. This is a great way for them to get a mixture of different fruits and all kids will love eating them as they are something different.

So a healthy kids choice of meals mean they will look forward to meal times instead of looking for other unhealthy foods to eat.

Finding a Healthy Kids Recipe

Healthy Kids BreakfastsSometimes finding a healthy kids recipe can be more difficult than you think. There are many places to get recipes from but often they contain lots of the wrong ingredients that you don’t want to give your child. High sugar and salt content for instance or not recommended and won’t do their health any good at all.

Here are some simple to make, healthy kid’s recipes that you will enjoy making and your kids will love eating:

Fruit Pancakes

Pancakes are really easy to make but by adding fruit to them you are getting essential nutrients into your child. You can make the mix yourself or simply go and buy a pancake mixture straight off the shelf. Let your kids choose the fruits they want to add and it will only take a few minutes to make. Get them involved in making them and they will enjoy eating them even more.

Healthy Sandwiches

Rather than just making plain old sandwiches, get your kids involved in making them with various ingredients. Have competitions who can make the best ones. Just have plenty of vegetables and lean meats at hand and this will encourage them to add them to their sandwiches.

Healthy Tacos

Just like the sandwiches above, having lots of healthy ingredients and tacos can make great meals too. Again you can encourage competitions of who can make the best tasting ones. You can buy plain tacos or even spicy ones to really add some taste to the meal.

These are just a few examples of healthy kid’s recipes you can prepare today. If you make creating the meals fun, your kids will eat them all without being focussed on eating healthy foods. Making meal times fun and enjoyable can really be the key to getting your kids to eat healthily.
